It will again be at Calvary Chapel North Long Beach 5722 Lime Ave. Long Beach 90805.

The conference will begin at 8:30, so check in and continental breakfast will be available from 7:45-8:30.

2022 Teacher Training Conference: Speakers and Workshops

Kelli Romero – Kelli brings her two decades of experience serving local churches as Director of Kids Ministry, an Awana Commander and International Speaker. Know as one of the fiercest motivators you’ll meet, Kelli trains volunteers and church leaders with passion, grace and urgency. Kelli serves as the Children’s Ministry Servants Conference Committee at Calvary Chapel South Bay and a resource board member for the Christian Ministry Training Association in Pasadena, CA (CMTA).

● Five Ways Teachers Win In 2022
 The pandemic in a way forced us focus on what matters most in ministry. Kelli will share pre covid methods of teaching kids that need our attention and maybe even some adjusting as we go forward serving children & families.

● Goodbye Isn’t Forever
Grandparenting is a joy, but it can be complicated when family live away from each other or when conflict has caused estrangement. Kelli will share insights and resources that help navigate the joy and heartbreak of loving from a distance.

Darlene Theis – Darlene has been involved in Children’s Ministries for over 40 years through neighborhood “Good News Clubs”, afterschool Bible clubs in public schools and a popular conference speaker for the Calvary Chapel Curriculum Conference. She is a “teacher of teachers” with love for children of all ages. Currently, Darlene and her husband Doug are teaching a weekly Bible club in their home.`

● Sunday School 101 - full class demonstration taught by Darlene Theis where you become the children and Darlene demonstrates how she uses class discipline; the Attributes of God; songs that teach; Leading children to participate in prayer and in the participation of the Bible story of the day. Come and learn the “Simply-the-Story” method of teaching that is being used around the world with children and adults!

Cristina McConnell – Cristina is the Missionary Director with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Greater Long Beach Chapter since 2007. Part of this ministry, located in Bellflower, includes a Children’s Ministry Resource Bookstore. Cristina is certified through CEF Children’s Ministry Institute as an instructor of Teachers and a Leadership Trainer. She and her husband, Pastor Randy McConnell, reside in Bellflower where they are active in their community.

Frank Baldus - Frank’s been sharing the Gospel in many ways for over 15 years.  He was introduced to Open Air Campaigners (OAC) while on a Calvary Chapel Downey, short-term mission trip to France.  OAC is an international evangelism ministry with 200 missionaries dedicated to the public proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ & to equipping the Church to do the same.  OAC began in Australia in 1892 & has official offices in 34 countries & in 14 cities within the United States! After graduating from Calvary Chapel Bible College, Frank accepted a Missionary-Evangelist position with OAC in August of 2011. He regularly shares the Gospel with people of all ages throughout Southern California by God’s grace. Frank’s home church is Calvary Chapel Inglewood.  For more  information about OAC, check out OACUSA.ORG.

● Unique and Engaging Tools for Your Kid’s Ministry  -  In this workshop we will demonstrate Open Air Campaigners’’ (OAC) effective tools used regularly in our Kids Bible Clubs. We’ll complete a Bible verse puzzle and a Bible story/Gospel message utilizing a portable sketch board, florescent paints, a black light and our interactive lettering techniques. We will also demonstrate three powerful Gospel object lessons. (You may not be able to do this type of presentation, but you can invite Frank to share at your church or Bible club.)

Jane Nishimoto – Jane Nishimoto is a wife, mom of 4 children plus their spouses, grandmother of 6 and helps care for her 94 year old mother. In 2019 Jane retired from teaching in the Bellflower Unified School Districts.  She has a passion for children in crisis situations and is involved in Safe Families for children, is a court appointed special advocate (CASA) for a foster child, and supports Kingdom Causes and Family Promise of audio, visual, tactile and experiential as they work together to make any lesson unforgettable. the South Bay.  With God's help and grace, Jane is helping at Released Time Long Beach as we strive to return to our pre-Covid involvement in the public schools.

● Strategies for Hands on Learning
Believe it or not, the lesson’s effect is measured when the children leave the classroom! Changing their lives by affecting their choices is the ultimate goal of every Children’s ministry teacher. In this workshop you will discover how people of all ages learn through four teaching “modes”

Sally Atkinson – Sally has been directing Released Time Education in Long Beach for over 35 years, but her passion is teaching students and especially teaching students Bible themed songs with motions. Her involvement with Child Evangelism Fellowship and teaching a large Good News Club has been a great resource for helping students learn Bible verses. Currently Co-Directing the Released Time program with Jane Nishimoto, has given her more time to prepare for the 64 students God has brought to our Good News Club at Dooley School!

● Hiding God’s Word in Your Heart with Songs  - This workshop will focus on Bible verse and Bible themed songs using pre-recorded music. You will learn simple motions, some interpretive sign-language and receive resources for your own use. Learn how much fun it is to worship and praise the Lord with your students.

Stef & Peggy Mitrano - Stef is an associate pastor at Calvary Chapel South Bay, Gardena, CA where he has been on staff for over 20 years.  He oversees the Children’s Ministry for grades K-5th and is involved in missions. He also has developed H.I.S. Club, a discipleship club for kids K-9th grade. He is passionate about training and supporting those who serve children. He and Peggy have been happily married for 30 years. Peggy serves alongside her husband in Children’s Ministry where she oversees Mission Sundays, Kid’s Hand Motion Worship Team, Drama Ministry and composition classes at a local home schooling academy. 

Workshop: Storytelling  (Peggy Mitrano)

Storytelling is a fun and easy way to liven up your lesson. Come learn what the key elements of storytelling are which will captivate your audience.  Expressions, hand and body movements, and voice inflections will be covered.

Workshop: Missionaries and Their Great Adventures      (Peggy Mitrano)
Why is teaching about missionaries so important? As children learn about their Christian heritage, they learn more about God. As they marvel at what God has accomplished through others, they gain an understanding of what God can do through them. This workshop will give ideas on how to make missions and the lives of missionaries exciting.

Workshop: Instilling Hope in Children’s Lives   (Stef Mitrano)
There are many Hope stealers in children’s lives among them are, divorce, death, financial difficulties because of parent’s unemployment, drug/alcohol addiction, abusive parenting styles.    We will look at these topics and how to instill hope using the Word as the hope restorer.

Workshop: Ministering to children who have experienced trauma (Stef)

In this workshop we will identify what trauma is, the types of traumas, how trauma affects kids and some techniques to help children who are experiencing trauma.
